Knowledge is POWER. How much do you know about your body?!
If you are under chiropractic care you probably already know that your
amazing human body is a complex set of systems including the cardiovascular
system, respiratory system, digestive system, etc. … and I bet you know that all of
these are coordinated by your NERVOUS SYSTEM.
Your intelligent control system is running and coordinating your heart
beating, lungs breathing and food being digested all while you are reading this
RIGHT NOW without your conscious effort.
While you may not be thinking about it, your body has it all under control
and in fact your nervous system has several control settings that allow it to work
more efficiently.
One of these settings is termed “fight or flight” and maybe you’ve heard this
before, if so, you know that it means our stress response. The historic stress
response is a healthy kick in the rear, a blend of motivational stress hormones are
released to get you moving. On the other hand, the modern day stress response is
often not normal, nor healthy and we often need help turning it off.
The opposite nervous system control setting of “fight or flight” is a setting
termed “rest and digest” which describes our ability to turn off the stress response
so that our body can rebuild, digest and heal. You may have experienced a belly
rumble while getting adjusted, or letting out a big yawn like you’ve finally relaxed
after a stressful week as a clue that you have entered this state. Good job!
Recent research has shown that there is a third division to your autonomic
nervous system and it is called the “social engagement” setting (According to The
Polyvagal Theory developed by Steven Porges). The function of this part of your
nervous system influences the development of LANGUAGE, DECISION MAKING and
BONDING. It is thought that adjustments, especially to the upper cervical area of
your spine have a strong influence on the healthy development of the social aspect
of your nervous system!
***FUN FACT: Did you know that the prefrontal cortex (the rational part of
your brain responsible for decision making, reasoning and self-control) does not
fully develop until age 25?!
Now you KNOW what it takes to make up a healthy nervous system, see you in the
office for your adjustment!
