The Importance of Corrective Exercises

Whether you're dealing with an acute pain condition, a chronic pain condition, or if you simply hoping to maintain an active and pain-free lifestyle, exercise should be considered a regular part of your life. Corrective exercises are unique in that they are specifically prescribed by a physical therapist or chiropractor to help correct and prevent an underlying injury.

Here are a few reasons why we consider active exercise so crucial to patient wellness and recovery:

Fully customizable - To meet the unique needs of the patient. A typical prescription for tissue healing would be 3 sets of 20-30 repetitions (low load, and high volume). For strengthening, a typical prescription might look like 3 sets of 8-10 repetitions.

Correct improper posture - Corrective exercises can be used to facilitate improved neuromuscular control and movement patterns.

Increased strength, flexibility, and endurance - Corrective exercises and stretches can also help develop key muscles in the spine, arms, and legs.

Facilitates increased blood flow - Resulting in gentle muscle pump action to promote tissue healing, reduced swelling, and reduced pain.

Enhances the beneficial effects of manual chiropractic care and physical therapy techniques - Such as spinal adjustments, soft tissue mobilization, and modalities such as electrical stimulation.

Increased wellbeing - Exercise can even have a positive impact on the patient's perceived sense of wellness and psychological well-being.

Corrective Exercises Tailored to Each Client

The exact exercise prescription given to you by your Kennesaw chiropractor will depend on several factors, including the type and severity of your injury, whether the injury is acute or chronic, your current fitness level, and whether you have any other underlying factors that are contributing to your condition.

For instance, many people with back pain will be prescribed corrective exercises to improve the stability of their trunk muscles to help maintain an ideal spinal alignment following and adjustment. Equally, exercises could be given that bias flexion or extension movements, depending on which direction of movement reduces symptoms of pain, stiffness, and lower extremity numbness and weakness. These exercises are first done under the careful supervision of our staff, but they are also meant to be performed at home as part of a comprehensive home exercise program.
